The Algarve, which takes its
name from the Arabic 'al gharb' meaning 'the land to
the west', is one of Europe's leading golfing destinations.
Just 20 minutes drive from Faro Airport, Vale do Lobo
lies at the heart of one of the most scenic and accessible
regions of this beautiful coastline and boasts two magnificent
18-hole courses of contrasting character - the Royal
Course and the Ocean Course.
Designed by the legendary British golfer Sir Henry Cotton
and upgraded in more recent times by the American golf
architect Rocky Roquemore, they offer some of the best
golf in the Algarve. The Royal Course has been brought
to perfection over the past few years. The par 72 layout
incorporates the world famous par 3 16th, a spectacular
hole which calls for an extensive carry over two yawning
chasms in the red sandstone cliffs to the green 176
metres away. It is probably the most photographed hole
in the history of golf. Another memorable hole is Roquemore's
signature par 3 9th over a lake to a wonderful semi-island
green.
The Ocean Course is a typical links style layout with
exhilarating ocean views and sea breezes which demand
extra concentration. The 178 metre par 3 which runs
parallel to the beach is a good example of some of the
more testing holes on this lovely course which is also
set to be further upgraded and, in time, combined with
a third new 18-hole course designed by Roquemore which
is in the pipeline.
This combination of links and inland golf provides an
excellent challenge for visiting golfers of all levels
of ability who can enjoy the comforts of luxury rented
accommodation in Vale do Lobo's quality apartments and
villas. These are available to independent clients as
well as those participating in the resort's special
golfing packages. Restaurants offering excellent cuisine
include Spikes in the Vale do Lobo golf clubhouse and
there are vibrant bars, shops and a disco in the resort's
praça area. Golfers also have the opportunity
to purchase a special Vale do Lobo golf title to one
or both of the courses for between 15 and 25 years which
guarantees unlimited golf and other benefits.
